Where the Marvel Universe begins. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's Fantastic Four #1–30 (1961–64) bring the first family, Doctor Doom, the Skrulls and the return of Namor. Kirby drew 97% of the book.

Frank Miller turns Daredevil into a street-level noir in #158–191, with Elektra, Bullseye and the Kingpin. Miller drew 75% of the book, with Klaus Janson's inks giving it its dark, heavy look.

Walter Simonson wrote and drew one of Marvel's great epics: Thor #337–382, from Beta Ray Bill to the Surtur saga. Over 1,000 pages, 62% drawn by Simonson himself.

John Byrne's Fantastic Four (#209–260) is the series' best run after Lee and Kirby – big ideas, clear storytelling, a classic look. Byrne drew 85% of this 1,000-page book.

Giant-Size X-Men #1 and X-Men #94–131: the all-new team of Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus. Chris Claremont writes, Dave Cockrum and John Byrne draw – Byrne 52% of the book – on the road to the Dark Phoenix Saga.

Amazing Fantasy #15 and Amazing Spider-Man #1–38: Lee and Steve Ditko create Spider-Man, the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and the Sinister Six. Ditko drew 94% of it.

Al Ewing's Immortal Hulk turns the Hulk into a horror comic – and one of the best Marvel runs of the century. All 50 issues in one 1,350-page book; Joe Bennett drew 66%.

Ed Brubaker brings back Bucky as the Winter Soldier in Captain America #1–25 – a spy thriller that inspired the films. Steve Epting drew 48%, with Mike Perkins, Michael Lark and others on the rest.

Uncanny X-Men #244–269, the end of Claremont's long run and the arrival of Jim Lee. Despite the title, Marc Silvestri drew more of it (41%) than Lee – volume 2 is the bigger Jim Lee book.

Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan's Tomb of Dracula #1–31 is Marvel's best horror comic, and the first appearance of Blade. Colan drew 85% of the book, with atmosphere no one else matched.
